Build Policies Around User Intent

The most effective implementation point is usually before account creation is finalized. Validate the email when the user submits the form, then use the result to select a proportionate response. Avoid making people wait until after they have completed a long onboarding flow to learn that their address cannot be used.

For lower-risk workflows, a soft response can preserve conversion. Explain that temporary inboxes may not support account recovery, receipts, or future access, then ask for a permanent address. Keep Validation Close to the Source of Truth

Email checks are most useful when they run close to the moment data enters your system. Client-side checks can improve form feedback, but server-side enforcement is necessary when the result affects account creation, access, or rewards. Requests can be bypassed, replayed, or submitted through paths your frontend does not control.

Keep the validation outcome with the signup event so downstream systems understand what happened. Store the decision and the policy version that produced it, rather than only a binary label. That makes it possible to audit changes, investigate incidents, and compare the performance of revised rules without rewriting history.

Do Not Confuse Disposable With Undeliverable
